At the beginning of the new academic year, Durham School’s newly appointed Monitors took part in one of the School’s long-standing traditions: signing the Monitor Book.
The book dates back to 1904 and contains the signatures of generations of pupils who have held this important position. By adding their own names, this year’s Monitors became part of a record stretching across 122 years of Durham School history.
However, the signing represents much more than the continuation of a tradition. Appointed from Year 13, Monitors are trusted with an important role within the School community. They provide pastoral support to fellow pupils, assist with the smooth running of daily School life and act as positive role models for younger members of the School.
The position also offers pupils valuable experience of leadership, service and responsibility. Monitors are expected to demonstrate the Foundation’s MARK values through moral integrity, ambition, responsibility and kindness – qualities which shape both how they lead and how they support those around them.
Signing the Monitor Book connects today’s pupils with those who have served the School before them, while marking the beginning of the contribution they will make during their own final year.
We congratulate all of our new Monitors and wish them every success as they take on their responsibilities and help to shape School life during the year ahead.
