VIRTUAL TOUR

Ways to Give

Today’s pupils benefit from the encouragement and past contributions of our benefactors.

Unlike many schools, Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation does not have any historic financial endowment, and every facility from which our pupils’ benefit is the product of the philanthropy of previous generations.

Your donation will support our continuing commitment to providing excellent facilities, and to widening access as far as we are able. We invite you to contribute to help future generations gain “Confidence for Life.”

Ways of Giving

There are many ways in which you can support Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation; these are detailed below. All your donations, no matter what size, are invaluable. Thank you for your support.

(If you are a UK tax payer, we can claim an extra 25% in Gift Aid on top of your donation at no extra charge to you. Simply fill in your details on the donation form, or let us know when you make your donation)

The Playground Pathway

A stone is just that, a stone – but once you bring multiple stones together, you create the foundations for something truly remarkable. That is what the Playground Pathway is all about. In generations past, pupils have taken pride in carving their name in dorms, on tables and latterly in the Chapel, which is now full. We are now looking for a new way for pupils, Old Dunelmians, and parents to make their mark. As well as creating a much-needed and impressive
footpath across the front of the Playground, the Pathway will be a way for generations of Old Dunelmians, parents, and friends of the School to be part of our history and our future. However you are connected to Durham, I would urge you to join me, and the many other staff, parents, Old Dunelmians, and governors in making your mark, and paving the way for the future. Your gift will go to our In This Place campaign, which supports bursaries and campus development across the Foundation – particularly in the areas of sport, science, music and drama.

The Playground Pathway will stretch out from the steps that lead up to the pathway to the Vallance Building, across to the site of the new Pavilion, and on to the patio outside Big School.  The Pathway will be made from stone quarried in the North Pennines, and will be laid on top of a solid, reinforced concrete base. This will prevent the Pathway from being damaged by tree roots, ensuring it has a lasting impact for generations to come. The Pathway will grow over time, and in due course, we expect to repave the patio outside Big School with named stones.

You can download a copy of the plans for the pathway here.

Giving Days

The Foundation runs an annual Giving Day which celebrates the power of philanthropy across the Foundation and over the past three years has collectively raised over £100,000 for projects at Durham School and Chorister School.

Gifts in Wills

Supporting Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation with a gift or donation in your Will is a highly personal way of giving that has a lasting impact on future generations. You can choose to donate a specific sum, a share of your estate, or other assets such as stocks and shares. Making a bequest to charity can also lessen the burden of inheritance tax on your executors.

Legacies of all sizes are always appreciated, and the Foundation will never ask how much you have pledged, unless you wish to tell us.

If you are comfortable doing so, please let us know if you intend to leave Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation a legacy or gift in your will. Such a pledge does not bind you in any way, but it does give us the opportunity to share pertinent news and 1414 Society events with you, and, most importantly, to thank you for your support. Your response and any subsequent correspondence or discussion will be treated in the strictest confidence.

FAQ:

MAKING A PROVISION FOR A SURVIVING SPOUSE

Quite naturally, many are concerned that there is enough capital left in their estate to support their surviving spouse after they have gone. This can be ensured by both spouses agreeing to make due mention in their Will or Codicil, to the effect that the legacy to Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation is only paid out on the second death.

WHAT TYPE OF GIFT CAN I LEAVE IN MY WILL?

There are different ways in which you choose to support Durham in your will:

  • Residuary gift – the gift of all or part of the value of your estate once gifts and payments have been made*
  • Pecuniary gift – a fixed sum of money*
  • Specific gift – a named item*
  • Reversionary gift – allowing assets to be left for the care of a loved one for the duration of their lives, and upon their death, your gift will be passed on to your chosen recipient•

DOES DCSF HAVE A CHARITABLE STATUS?

Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation has charitable status for all UK tax purposes and the registered charity number is 1023407.

HOW CAN A GIFT IN MY WILL TO DCSF BENEFIT MY INHERITANCE TAX STATUS?

If you leave a gift to charity in your Will, the gift’s value will not be counted towards inheritance tax. This could reduce what your beneficiaries must pay or remove your inheritance tax liability altogether. Also, in some situations, anyone leaving 10% or more of their taxable estate to a charity may qualify for a reduced rate of inheritance tax – 36% rather than 40%. Please visit www.gov.uk/inheritance-tax for further information.

WILL MY GIFT BE AFFECTED BY CAPITAL GAINS TAX?

When someone dies, the value of their assets is re-established and any gains that arise during the administration of the estate (i.e. between death and sale) may be liable to capital gains tax. Charities are exempt from capital gains tax, so where a charity is a beneficiary in a will, it may be possible to use this exemption to benefit the whole estate.

DOES DCSF OFFER LEGAL ADVICE?

No, and we would always recommend that you should seek independent legal advice.
For further guidance on leaving a legacy gift, visit Octopus Legacy or Remember a Charity have more information available.

Gifts of Shares & Property

Gifts of land, property or qualifying shares, or a sale to Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation of such assets at less than their market value, may give rise to a claim for income tax and capital gains tax relief. A brief outline of how this process works may be found below, but for more detailed information please visit the HM Revenue & Customs website – www.hmrc.gov.uk – or contact your local tax office.

Income Tax Relief

  • Donors may be able to claim income tax relief on gifts/sales below market value) of:
  • Shares/securities listed on a recognised stock exchange
  • Shares/securities dealt in on a designated market in the UK
  • Units in an authorised unit trust (AUT)
  • Shares in a UK open-ended investment company (OEIC)
  • Holdings in certain foreign collective investment schemes
  • Qualifying interests in land in the UK

Capital Gains Tax Relief

Donors may receive relief from capital gains tax (CGT) when they gift or sell at less than market value an asset to the Foundation. Donors who make a gift of an asset are treated as making no gain or loss for CGT purposes and so do not pay any CGT on the gift.

Calculating Income Tax Relief on Your Gift

The first step is to add to the market value of the asset you are donating any associated costs of the disposal, such as legal fees. Deduct from this figure any money or other benefits you, or anybody connected with you, will receive in return for the gift. The resulting figure is then deducted from your total income for the tax year in which you make the gift.

Example:

Mr Holden owns a second home and decides to give it to Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation in tax year 2020-21. A qualified property agent values the property at £150,000 and charges £500 for his valuation services. To calculate the deduction from income for 2020-21 simply add the value of the property and the total amount of fees:

  • Property: £150,000
  • Valuation fees: £500
  • Total: £150,500

Thus, income tax relief of £150,500 from total taxable income is available for tax 2020-21.

Claiming Tax Relief

A claim for income tax relief can be made through a self-assessment tax return or via your local tax office. Please note that if you are due a tax refund because of your gift, you may ask HM Revenue & Customs to pay all or part of it directly to the Foundation, and you may do so as a Gift Aid donation.

In Memory Gifts and Memoriam Funds

Remember a Loved One Who Loved Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation

Making a donation to a cause or institution in memory of a loved one can mean a great deal. Such gifts acknowledge the significance of something they considered important in their life, or in other instances, it offers the hope of a tangibly positive outcome in the trauma of bereavement.

A gift could be a single donation made in their memory, or a fund could be established in your loved one’s name to enable friends and relatives to donate in lieu of flowers. Another option to consider would be a named fund which could receive an ongoing dedication to support a particular house, department, bursary or other area of School life.

If you wish to discuss giving to honour the memory of someone close to you, please contact the Development Director, Andrew Beales, a.beales@dcsf.org.uk0191 731 9270 ex 313108.

Payroll Giving

Your company may run a Payroll Giving scheme, through which you can make a regular gift to Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation through your payroll, and your employer may even match your contributions.

For example, a £15 gross salary deduction would reduce the overall tax liability of:

  • A basic rate taxpayer (paying 20% tax) by £3.00
  • Higher rate taxpayers (paying 40% tax) by as much as £6.00
  • Super rate taxpayers (paying 50% tax) by as much as £7.50

So, that £15 donation costs £12.00 (for basic rate taxpayers), £11 (for higher rate taxpayers) or £7.50 (for top rate tax payers).
