At Durham School, we are proud of our diverse international boarding community. Pupils from a range of countries and cultures live and learn together, sharing in all aspects of School life and contributing richly to the character of our Houses and the wider School community.
Joining a new School is a significant moment in a young person’s life, particularly when it also involves adapting to a new culture or language. We take great care to ensure that every new boarder is welcomed warmly and supported thoughtfully as they settle into life at Durham. House staff, tutors and teachers work closely together to help each pupil feel secure, valued and fully included from the very beginning.
Where English is an additional language, pupils benefit from tailored support designed to build confidence, fluency and independence. This enables them to participate fully in lessons and to make the most of the many opportunities available beyond the classroom.
Pastoral care lies at the heart of the Durham boarding experience. Each boarder belongs to a close-knit House community where they are known as an individual and supported with care and understanding. Staff are experienced in helping pupils navigate the challenges that can accompany a new start, including homesickness, cultural adjustment and language development, and families are encouraged to remain in close contact throughout the settling-in process. A buddy system also helps new boarders establish friendships and feel at home quickly.

Durham School is a community founded on kindness, respect and a strong sense of belonging. We value the perspectives and experiences that international pupils bring, and we are committed to ensuring that every child feels welcomed, supported and able to thrive.
Ahead of the start of term, new international boarders and their families are given opportunities to meet key staff, become familiar with the School and gain an early sense of life in boarding. This helps to make the transition into Durham as smooth and reassuring as possible.
Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation welcomes pupils of all ages from overseas.
- International Day pupils are welcome to apply from FS1 (age 3).
- Boarding Admissions to Durham School are considered at any stage of a child’s education from Year 7 (age 11) through to Sixth Form.
We greatly value the richness and diversity that our International pupils bring to our community.
We regularly celebrate this through our International School events such as Chinese New Year celebrations, Thanksgiving, Holi, International pupil dinners and themed school lunches.
