Durham School – Activity Week 2026: A Week of Adventure, Challenge and Community

Last week’s Activity Week was a fantastic celebration of adventure, teamwork, creativity and community spirit, giving pupils the opportunity to step away from their usual timetables and embrace a week of exciting experiences, personal growth and unforgettable memories.

Designed to encourage pupils to challenge themselves, develop new skills and strengthen friendships, Activity Week is always a highlight of the school calendar. Whether trying something for the very first time or building confidence in familiar activities, pupils approached every challenge with enthusiasm, determination and a willingness to step outside their comfort zones.

Throughout the week, pupils took part in a wide variety of activities, including baking, axe throwing, archery, scaling the climbing wall, Durham School Sports Day, the annual Colour Run, the Floor is Lava agility challenge, the Race to the Line challenge, Tai Chi on the Green in the glorious sunshine, and an adventurous trip to Beadnell. Each activity encouraged pupils to develop important life skills such as resilience, teamwork, communication, leadership and problem-solving, all while having an incredible amount of fun with their friends.

There were plenty of smiles, laughter and memorable moments along the way, and after a busy week of adventure, pupils were able to celebrate together with a well-earned can of pop and an ice lolly.

Giving Back to the Community

One of the most rewarding parts of Activity Week was House Community Day, where pupils had the opportunity to make a positive impact within the local community while learning the importance of compassion, service and social responsibility.

Year 8 girls from Pimlico House showed incredible kindness by creating 40 care packages for a homeless centre in Durham. Working together to assemble the packages, pupils demonstrated empathy and generosity, recognising how small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference to others.

Pupils from other houses visited The Grove Primary School, where they worked alongside children from Reception to Year 5, supporting painting activities, tennis sessions and reading. It was a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to develop leadership, patience and communication skills while inspiring younger children through encouragement and positive role modelling.

Meanwhile, our boys spent the day volunteering with a range of organisations across the region, making valuable contributions while gaining an appreciation for the important work these organisations carry out every day. They supported:

  • Heel & Toe Children’s Charity
  • Broomside House Residential Care Home
  • Trinity School, improving outdoor learning spaces
  • The Dales School, helping prepare and run the Summer Fayre
  • Durham Fringe Festival, assisting organisers with performance and advertising spaces
  • The Percy Hedley Foundation, supporting young people in the charity’s care

These experiences not only benefited the organisations involved but also helped pupils build confidence, develop practical skills, work collaboratively and appreciate the value of giving back to their local community.

A Special Visit from Durham Constabulary’s Dog Unit

Another standout moment of the week was a visit from Durham Constabulary’s Dog Unit, who gave pupils a fascinating insight into the vital role police dogs play in keeping communities safe.

Pupils learned about the rigorous training involved, how handlers work alongside their dogs in a variety of policing situations, and the strong partnership that exists between officer and animal. The visit sparked plenty of curiosity and questions, but for many, the highlight was undoubtedly meeting the dogs themselves, who quickly became the stars of the day.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Activity Week is about so much more than trying new activities. It is an opportunity for pupils to discover new interests, challenge themselves, build resilience and confidence, and create memories that will stay with them long after the week has ended.

From cheering one another on during sporting challenges and encouraging friends to conquer fears on the climbing wall, to working together on community projects and celebrating each other’s achievements, pupils demonstrated the values that make Durham School such a special place.

The week perfectly reflected our commitment to providing an education that extends beyond the classroom, helping pupils grow not only academically, but also as confident, compassionate and well-rounded young people who are ready to embrace every opportunity that comes their way.

A huge thank you to all of our staff and partner organisations whose hard work and dedication made Activity Week such a tremendous success. Most importantly, congratulations to all of our pupils for embracing every challenge with energy, positivity and determination.

We are already looking forward to seeing what adventures next year’s Activity Week will bring!
