This half term, our tutor programme at Durham School, is exploring the fifth element of our Wellbeing G.R.O.W.T.H. framework: T – Time. Through a series of structured discussions, pupils are encouraged to reflect on how they use their time both in and out of school, and to develop an understanding of how effective time management supports their wellbeing, academic progress and personal development. By focusing on this aspect of the framework, we aim to help pupils recognise the value of time and begin to take ownership of how they prioritise different areas of their lives.

This week, tutor sessions have centred on the theme of time management, with pupils considering how they prioritise tasks based on what they perceive to be most or least important. Conversations have explored the importance of balancing academic responsibilities with rest, relaxation and time spent with friends and family. Pupils have been encouraged to think practically about how they structure their time, recognising that maintaining a healthy balance is key to both success and wellbeing. These discussions are designed to equip pupils with lifelong skills that will support them not only in school, but in the wider demands of adult life.

This focus is particularly relevant at this point in the academic year, as our Year 11 pupils begin their GCSE examinations, with subjects such as Design and Technology, Languages, Art and Drama taking place this week and next, ahead of study leave. We know that, as adults, time can often feel limited and competing demands can be challenging to manage. By introducing these conversations early, we hope to support pupils in developing a positive and realistic approach to managing their time, helping them to navigate busy periods with confidence and resilience.
