Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation is delighted to announce the appointment of Ms Jane Leithead as the new Head of Chorister School.
Jane joins the Foundation from La Côte International School, part of Nord Anglia Education in Switzerland, where she is currently Assistant Headteacher. In her role, she leads professional learning and staff development across the primary school, supports teaching and learning quality assurance, curriculum development and school improvement, as well as performance management and coaching for teachers.
With more than 20 years’ experience across UK and international education, Jane brings a wealth of leadership expertise to Chorister School. She has previously held senior leadership positions including Acting Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher and Assistant Headteacher, developing a strong track record in curriculum development, evidence-informed practice, professional learning and creating inclusive school cultures where children and staff can thrive.
Originally from Morpeth, Jane is excited to return to the North East. She studied Education at Durham University and holds a BA (Hons) with Qualified Teacher Status, an MA in International Development and Education, awarded with Distinction by Newcastle University, and the National Professional Qualification for Headship.
Jane is passionate about creating opportunities for teachers to learn from one another through coaching, observation and professional enquiry. Her educational vision is centred on ensuring every child feels known, valued and encouraged to contribute, while developing the confidence, resilience, communication skills and character needed to flourish throughout life.
Speaking about her appointment, Jane said:
“I feel incredibly privileged to be joining Chorister School and Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation. Having studied in Durham, the city has always been a special place for me and I am excited to be returning to the North East and becoming part of this community.
“Throughout the appointment process, I was struck by the warmth of the School, the enthusiasm of the staff and, above all, the confidence of the children. What excites me most about Chorister School is the wealth of opportunities available to pupils and the way these help them grow not only academically, but also as people.
“My hope is that every child leaves Chorister School with the confidence to embrace opportunities, take on challenges and believe in what they are capable of. Alongside excellent academic foundations, I want children to develop the resilience, adaptability and character that will help them thrive wherever life takes them.”
Mr Simon Dobson, Chairman of Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation, said:
“We are delighted to welcome Jane as the new Head of Chorister School. She brings a thoughtful, child-centred approach to leadership, extensive experience of school improvement and a deep commitment to helping both pupils and colleagues flourish.
“Jane’s values and educational vision align strongly with those of the Foundation. Her focus on belonging, character, opportunity and high-quality teaching will build on the many strengths of Chorister School, while helping us continue to offer an exceptional educational journey for children and families.”
Outside of school, Jane enjoys running, cycling, skiing and hiking, and music continues to play an important role in her life. A talented flautist and singer, she has been an active member of local wind bands in both Northumberland and Switzerland.
Jane will take up the role of Head of Chorister School in January 2027.
