Durham School is our senior School for ages 11–18. It is here, among inspiring School buildings steeped in heritage, that pupils are given the chance to immerse themselves fully in their education.
At the heart of this is a warm and inclusive pastoral structure, where strong and supportive relationships between staff and pupils, and between pupils themselves, are both expected and championed. Our long-standing House system creates a support network for pupils in which both individual and team achievements are encouraged and celebrated.
Welcome from the Head

Located at the heart of this amazing and ancient City, Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation is an exciting and inspirational place of learning; it is a place of activity, of warmth, but more importantly of community.
With a thousand years of history and tradition, the Foundation draws on what is best from the past while equipping our pupils for tomorrow with a vibrant education. The pupils receive the best academic education they can so that they face the future with the greatest number of choices. They experience a rich range of opportunities which develop wide competence, supporting them to become confident young adults who respond with agility and lead in this ever-changing world.
At its heart, a Durham education is challengingly simple, and our ambition for every pupil is to be decent, to have clear values, and have the courage to stand by them: this is the MARK of a Durham education that will last a lifetime.
I am absolutely certain Durham will provide this education.
I am delighted that you have chosen to be here and look forward to meeting you.
Dr Michael Alderson,
Principal and Head of Durham School
