DCSF Wellbeing

At Durham School, our Peer Mentors play an important role in supporting the wellbeing of fellow pupils. Open to students in Years 11, 12, and 13, the Peer Mentoring programme offers pupils someone approachable and relatable to talk to when they need extra help or support.

Peer Mentors provide support either on a one-to-one basis or in small groups. Some are paired with a younger pupil and meet with them regularly, building a valuable relationship and acting as an additional pillar of support. They also operate a weekly lunchtime drop-in session for any pupils to reach out to them. A Peer Mentor is easily identified by their badges and are known in their Houses so that pupils are confident in approaching them.

Additionally, Peer Mentors visit Chorister School to have lunch and talk with Junior School pupils, particularly in Years 5 and 6, to support them with low-level issues, such as friendship or nerves about transitioning to Durham School.

The role of a Peer Mentor is highly valued and is a brilliant opportunity for developing skills such as emotional intelligence, problem solving, and conflict resolution to name just a few. Peer Mentors undertake detailed training on safeguarding and communication before they commence their roles.

Speaking to a few of our new Year 12 Peer Mentors, their reasons for signing up for the role included gaining experience working with young people, learning to deal with conflict and difficult situations, and enhancing their problem-solving skills. The unanimous answer to what they were most looking forward to in the role was the opportunity to help others.

At its heart, the Peer Mentoring programme is about building connections, growing confidence, and creating a school community where everyone feels supported. Our Peer Mentors are a shining example of how pupils can make a positive impact on one another’s lives, and we’re proud of the compassion, maturity, and leadership they bring to the role.
