Over recent years, the House Music competitions at Chorister School have become a much-loved highlight of the house event calendar, offering pupils the chance to come together in celebration of shared ambition, teamwork, and performance. At their heart, these competitions aim to nurture confidence, musical discipline, and a genuine love of singing, while giving children the invaluable experience of performing in front of a large and supportive audience. Standing on stage, representing their House, and contributing to a collective musical outcome encourages resilience, pride, and a sense of belonging that extends well beyond the competition itself.
To keep the experience fresh and engaging, the format alternates each year. One year focuses on a Christmas-themed competition, where pupils learn a song that is later sung in the Cathedral at the end-of-term service, linking the competition directly to the School’s wider music culture. The following year takes on a more exuberant feel, with a theme based around a well-known musical artist. Over the years this has included much-loved repertoires from ABBA and Elton John, allowing pupils to explore different musical styles while performing music that resonates with both singers and audience alike.
This year, the spotlight fell on the music of Queen, and the standard of performance was a real testament to the pupils’ enthusiasm and hard work. Audiences were treated to spirited renditions of Radio Ga Ga, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, I Want to Break Free, and Seven Seas of Rhye. As always, the competition showcased not only musical talent, but also the confidence, joy, and ambition that House Music continues to inspire in our pupils year after year. Our pupils were even treated to a staff surprise performance of Don’t stop me now!
