Drama Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation Durham School Events

As excitement builds for Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation’s upcoming production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, a huge amount of work is taking place behind the scenes to bring the show to life. One of the key creative forces behind the production is Miss Halligan, who is leading the costume design for what promises to be one of the largest productions the school has staged.

Miss Halligan’s journey with DCSF productions began in 2023, when she worked on her first junior show, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Throwing herself straight into the creative process, she supported the production through set building and painting, helping to create the magical world of Willy Wonka on stage.

The following year, she played a major role in the whole school production of Return to the Forbidden Planet, staged at the Gala Theatre. Making full use of her Textile Design degree, Miss Halligan hand-made approximately 90% of the costumes for the show – a remarkable achievement that showcased her creativity, technical skill and dedication.

Since then, she has continued to support numerous GCSE and A Level drama productions, helping to transform pupils’ creative visions into reality. From building sets from scratch to hand-painting wallpaper and sewing costumes, Miss Halligan plays a vital role in the success of each performance. She describes feeling an enormous sense of pride and satisfaction at the end of every production, knowing she has helped pupils bring their ideas to life on stage.

This year’s production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang presents an exciting but demanding challenge. With a large cast and multiple costume changes, the scale of the production has required careful planning, creativity and attention to detail. As show week approaches, Miss Halligan is busy working through an extensive to-do list, alongside a dedicated team who are all working tirelessly to ensure the show is a success.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a truly spectacular production, and the costumes will play a huge part in creating the magic of the performance. From adding depth and character to dazzling audiences with colour and design, the costumes help transport viewers into the world of the story.

Miss Halligan and the entire production team are excited to see everything come together on stage, and audiences can look forward to a visually stunning and unforgettable show.
