Flexi Boarding at Durham School & Chorister School

Boarding has always been an important part of life at Durham School and Chorister School. Set in the heart of Durham’s historic Cathedral quarter, our boarding houses provide a warm, caring and structured environment where pupils can live, learn and grow alongside their friends.

While many of our Choristers board as part of their musical commitments, boarding is also open to all pupils in both schools — and is increasingly chosen by families who appreciate the flexibility, routine and friendship it brings.

What is Flexi Boarding?

Flexi boarding allows pupils to stay in the boarding house for a set number of nights each week or on selected evenings when needed. It is a popular option for families who may not need full or weekly boarding, but who recognise the value of:

  • A settled end to the school day

  • Time for homework and structured study

  • A supportive “home-from-home” environment

  • Reduced travel during busy times

  • The chance for children to build independence in small steps

For some pupils, flexi boarding is a first introduction to boarding. For others, it simply makes family life easier.

Belonging and Community

What matters most to us is that every boarder feels they belong.

Weekly boarders, full boarders, flexi boarders and all share the same houses, common rooms and routines. They eat together, take part in evening activities together, and support one another as part of one boarding community. Our pastoral and house teams know each boarder individually and are always there to listen, guide and encourage.

We are proud to offer boarding that is warm, inclusive and firmly rooted in family values.

Try Boarding with a Taster Night

We understand that boarding is a big decision for families. That’s why we offer taster boarding nights throughout the year for pupils to experience life in the house before making any commitment.

There is no expectation attached — simply an opportunity to explore whether boarding could work for your child.
