Durham School pupils have once again achieved outstanding GCSE results, with particular strengths in the sciences, languages, and computing, reflecting the breadth and depth of academic excellence across the school.
These achievements highlight the strength of our academic provision and the determination of our young people, who began their senior school journey in the midst of the pandemic and have shown remarkable resilience.
This year’s results include some outstanding achievements across a broad range of subjects:
- 15% of all grades were the top Grade 9
- 44.3% of all grades were at 7–9 (the equivalent of A*–A).
In the sciences, results were particularly strong, with 95% of Physics and Biology grades at 7–9, and Chemistry achieving 100% at 7–9.
- History secured 75% 7–9 grades.
- Latin achieved a perfect 100% Grade 9, with Roan S leading the way.
Strong performances were also seen in Mathematics, English Literature and Language, and Computer Science, where pupils secured significant numbers of the highest grades. A particular highlight came from Sam F in Year 9, who sat GCSE Computer Science early and achieved a Grade 9 – a remarkable achievement that demonstrates both ability and ambition.
A number of pupils achieved exceptional results; Aidan C, Oscar P, James T, Freya M, William C, Zia C and Rosie M were thrilled to see multiple Grade 9s in their envelopes.
Speaking of their success, Interim Principal Andrew Pearson said:
“We are so proud of the achievements of this group. They started senior school in the strangest of circumstances and were at a very impressionable age when all that was considered normal was being thrown up in the air. That they have persevered, worked hard, and come out of their first set of external exams with such fantastic results tells everything about their resilience and determination. I am delighted with their achievements today and I look forward to seeing how they will thrive in the Sixth Form.”
These results are not only an academic success but also a reflection of the values that underpin life at Durham School. Pupils have demonstrated ambition in their studies, responsibility in their approach to learning, kindness in supporting each other, and moral integrity in navigating challenges. As this year group embarks on the next stage of their education in the Sixth Form, we look forward to seeing them continue to flourish both academically and personally.
