Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation Durham School Events Old Dunelmians
Last week, pupils from Years 10 to 13 took part in a Careers Networking Breakfast, bringing together current pupils with an exceptional group of Old Dunelmians, professional partners and parents from the Friends of DCSF Business Breakfast network, representing a wide range of industries.
Held in Big School and structured as a marketplace-style event, the morning gave pupils the opportunity to engage directly with professionals working in sectors including medicine, law, engineering, finance, media, construction, education and entrepreneurship. Through open conversations and informal discussion, pupils were able to explore different career pathways, ask practical questions and gain insight into life beyond school.
The event formed part of Durham School’s wider commitment to preparing pupils for the future – not only academically, but through exposure to real-world perspectives, role models and experiences. By meeting former pupils who have taken diverse routes after leaving Durham, alongside experienced professionals and supportive parent partners, pupils were encouraged to think critically about their own interests, strengths and aspirations.
Crucially, the event highlighted the strength and generosity of both the Old Dunelmian network and the wider Durham School community. Many visitors gave their time specifically to share their experiences, reflect honestly on their career journeys and offer guidance to the next generation. Their willingness to engage so openly with pupils demonstrates the strong and lasting connections that support Durham pupils both during their education and beyond.
Pupils across all year groups were supported by staff throughout the sessions, ensuring discussions were purposeful and relevant to each stage of decision-making, from early exploration in Year 10, to more focused planning for GCSE and Sixth Form pupils.
Events such as the Careers Networking Breakfast play an important role in helping pupils make informed choices about their future. They reinforce the value of a Durham education while building confidence, ambition and a clear understanding of the opportunities ahead.
Durham School is grateful to all those who gave their time to support the event and looks forward to continuing to strengthen links between pupils, parents, alumni and the wider professional community.
