On Wednesday 19 November every pupil in Durham School took to the stage in the historic School chapel to take part in the annual House Music Competition.

Each House nominated a small group of singers and musicians to perform a “part song” piece.  This was then followed by a  whole House number, involving all members of the House.

Senior pupils take the lead in the competition, choosing the songs and devising the routines, as well as organising weeks of rehearsals in the Houses and encouraging all members of the House to play their part.

The contest was judged by Chorister School Director of Music Mrs Emily Murray.  There are trophies for best part song and best overall House.

The part song competition was won for the first time by the girls of Lodge House – impressive in what is only their second year!

Their rendition of ABBA’s The Winner Takes it All impressed Mrs Murray.

The keenly anticipated overall winners this year were the boys of Poole House.  Their renditions of Radio GaGa by Queen and Madness’s It Must Be Love helped them to take the top prize in this year’s 1980s themed contest.

All the Houses performed well, with notable mentions to School House for their rendition of the cult 1980s hit – Telephone Man while The Caffinites impressed with Elton John’s I’m Still Standing MacLeod impressed with Heaven is a Place on Earth, made famous by Belinda Carlisle.  Pimlico were also on sparkling form with the Madonna classic Like a Prayer.

As a special surprise the evening ended with members of School Staff taking to the stage to perform the 1981 anthem  Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey.

Congratulations to all the Houses and especially the winners for taking your part in this amazing Durham School event.
