Durham Cathedral was filled with music, tradition, and celebration this week as Dr Michael Alderson was formally installed as Principal of Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation (DCSF).
The service of Evensong and Installation marked a significant moment in the life of the Foundation. For historic reasons, the Principal of DCSF is a member of the Cathedral’s Foundation and has a stall [seat] in the Cathedral quire. During the service, Dr Alderson was ceremonially placed in this stall by the Dean of Durham, symbolising the deep and enduring partnership between the school and the Cathedral.
The Cathedral Choir led the congregation in beautiful music, including Psalm 119. 97–112, Dyson in F, and Rutter’s God be in my head.
Dr Michael Alderson, Principal of DCSF, said:
“It is a great honour to be formally installed as Principal in the Cathedral, at the heart of our Foundation. This tradition reflects the unique relationship between our school and the Cathedral, which has shaped the education and lives of so many young people for generations. I look forward to building on this legacy as we continue to grow and thrive together as a community.”
The occasion brought together pupils, staff, parents, alumni, and friends of the Foundation, highlighting the special role that Durham Cathedral plays in the daily life of the school. It was a proud and memorable evening in the story of DCSF.
