Staff Spotlight!

Mrs Warne, Director of Teaching and Learning (also Initial Teacher Training Coordinator, Head of EPQ and Teacher in the Classics Department).

Mrs Warne has been with us at DCSF for 8 years, but did you know that before working at Durham School she worked at Chorister School for a few years? Before her time at DCSF, she also taught in other small independent all-through schools up to GCSE and A Level. Also, Mrs Warne used to run an events company with her husband. They worked with famous names including Gary Lineker, The Lightning Seeds and East 17!

Mrs Warne says Durham School is very similar to the school she attended as a boarder. She thinks that the community that boarding fosters for everyone in the school is amazing, and she loves being able to get to know pupils whether she teaches them or not.

Mrs Warne is particularly proud of her work organising a national education conference in 2023 with some well-known speakers from the education world, and over 200 teachers attended from around the country. She describes it as an amazing day and was proud to put Durham School on the map.

Staff Spotlight!

Miss Tiplady, International Admissions Manager.

Before Miss Tiplady joined us at DCSF, she completed her Master’s in Professional Translation for European Languages and worked as a Translation Project Manager. Having lived abroad during her time at university, she was inspired to join DCSF and help pupils transition to the UK from overseas.

Travel is one of Miss Tiplady’s biggest passions. Some of her favourite countries that she has explored include Saudi Arabia, Brazil, South Korea, China, Japan, Romania and Jordan. Did you know she has also swum in the Amazon River? Her dream countries to visit are Uzbekistan, Palau, Namibia and French Polynesia.

When she’s not at Durham School or exploring the globe, Miss Tiplady is often walking with her miniature dachshund called Milo, or trying out new foods. She particularly loves Japanese, Vietnamese and Malaysian cuisine.

Miss Tiplady believes her colleagues would describe her as adventurous, optimistic and caring. Also, if she could switch roles with anyone in School for a day, she would be an art teacher as she is obsessed with art history!

Today we celebrate the life of Thomas Langley, Bishop of Durham, who re-endowed the School in 1414.

Bishop Thomas Langley, who died on this day in 1437, played a remarkable role in shaping both Durham School and the wider medieval world. As well as refounding the School, he was the second longest-serving Chancellor of the medieval period and held many senior titles, including Dean of York, Keeper of the King’s Signet, and Keeper of the Privy Seal.

Langley was also prevented by the Pope from taking up roles as Bishop of London and Archbishop of York, and he famously refused the title of Pseudocardinal offered by Antipope John XXIII in 1411.

Beyond Durham, he founded Middleton Grammar School in Lancashire and reorganised teaching at Durham Cathedral to create what became Durham School. His impact on Durham Cathedral is still visible today—he blocked the Great West Door with an altar and his own tomb, prompting the creation of new entrances and large buttresses that prevent the building from slipping towards the river.
