Chorister Good Schools Guide

Welcome to Chorister School

Set in the heart of Durham’s historic cathedral precinct, Chorister School offers a unique blend of tradition, academic excellence and a nurturing, forward-thinking education. With a rich heritage and a vibrant modern outlook, the school provides an inspiring environment where every child is encouraged to thrive.

Leadership with Vision

Since 2021, the school has been led by Headmistress Sally Harrod, an experienced and dedicated educator with a passion for teaching that began in childhood. With a background in English and a strong focus on literacy, she has introduced new writing frameworks and a comprehensive oracy programme to strengthen pupils’ communication skills.

Under her leadership, the school has successfully navigated significant change, including the relocation of the pre-prep to the main site. This transition has strengthened the sense of community, supported by initiatives such as walking buses and enhanced pastoral care.

Her philosophy is simple yet powerful:
“A happy child is a learning child.”

A Nurturing and Inclusive Community

Chorister School is proudly academically non-selective, welcoming pupils from a wide range of backgrounds. Small class sizes and a personalised approach ensure that every pupil is known, supported and encouraged.

Pupil voice and wellbeing are central to school life, with initiatives designed to build confidence, resilience and kindness. From wellbeing ambassadors to “time to talk” sessions between older and younger pupils, the culture is one of mutual respect and care.

Parents value the approachable and responsive leadership, as well as the school’s willingness to listen and evolve.

Inspiring Learning from the Start

From the earliest years, learning at Chorister School is engaging, creative and confidence-building. The pre-prep curriculum combines strong foundations in English and maths with a rich focus on science, technology and outdoor learning.

As pupils progress, they benefit from specialist teaching in subjects including music, PE, languages and science. The curriculum evolves to include modern skills such as coding and AI, alongside traditional hands-on learning.

With class sizes typically around 14–20 pupils, teaching remains highly personalised and supportive.

Exceptional Pastoral Care and Support

Pastoral care is at the heart of the school’s ethos. A dedicated wellbeing space provides a calm and supportive environment for pupils, while the learning support department offers highly individualised provision.

Support for pupils with additional needs is carefully tailored and regularly reviewed, helping every pupil to grow in confidence and reach their full potential.

A Rich Co-Curricular Experience

Chorister School offers an outstanding range of opportunities beyond the classroom:

  • Music plays a central role, with choristers participating in an exceptional programme linked to Durham Cathedral, while all pupils are encouraged to take part in performances and ensembles.
  • Sport focuses on participation and enjoyment, with a variety of team games and activities including swimming and rowing.
  • Drama and art are integral to school life, fostering creativity and self-expression through regular productions and exhibitions.
  • A wide range of clubs and activities ensures there is something for every interest, from STEM to creative arts.

A Unique and Historic Setting

The school’s setting is truly special. Surrounded by the stunning architecture of Durham Cathedral, pupils learn in buildings steeped in history, featuring vaulted ceilings, winding staircases and charming hidden spaces.

Outdoor areas, including a “secret garden” and forest school provision, provide opportunities for exploration, play and hands-on learning.

Boarding and Flexibility

Flexible boarding is available from Year 3, offering a welcoming and homely environment. Choristers benefit from regular boarding as part of their role, while other pupils can take advantage of flexible arrangements to suit family life.

Pathways and Outcomes

Over 90% of pupils progress to Durham School, supported by a smooth transition process and strong academic preparation. Scholarships and a wide range of achievements reflect the school’s commitment to developing well-rounded individuals.

The Chorister School Experience

Chorister School combines academic ambition with a genuine focus on happiness and wellbeing. With its strong sense of community, inspiring teaching and exceptional opportunities, it provides a foundation for lifelong learning and success.

A beautiful and traditional school, without a hint of stuffiness – where every pupil is encouraged to flourish.
