Using Words for Good at Durham School

At Durham School, we believe that words matter. The language young people use every day has the power to build others up, strengthen communities and make a positive difference in the world around them.

During tutor time this week, pupils took part in a thoughtful activity exploring how the words we choose can influence others, shape relationships and reflect our values. Through discussion and reflection, pupils considered how language can affect how people feel and how we treat one another, both in school and beyond.

As part of the session, pupils were invited to think about well-known role models who have used their voices to inspire positive change. Figures such as Martin Luther King Jr., Malala Yousafzai and Greta Thunberg helped bring this to life, showing how respectful yet powerful communication can shine a light on important issues including equality, education and climate action. By looking at these real-world examples, pupils were able to see that words can be a force for good and that thoughtful communication can have a lasting impact.

The activity also encouraged pupils to think about how this applies in everyday life. From encouraging a friend and standing up for someone who may be treated unfairly, to thanking members of the community or sharing positive messages online, pupils reflected on the small but meaningful ways they can use words to make a difference.

These conversations are an important part of helping young people develop not only confidence in their own voice, but also empathy, kindness and respect for others. At Durham School, we want our pupils to understand that creating a positive community starts with everyday actions — and often, with the words we choose to use.
