On Wednesday, we held our Music Scholars` Recital, witnessing the talent and hard work of so many Durham School pupils.
We were treated to incredible performances by Hilda, Grace, Symeon, Christopher, Yichenxi, Yoonchan, Owen, Xavier, Jack, Samantha, Edward C, George, Edward N, Robbie, Tabitha, Dorothy, Aroa, Ruby, Joshua, Thomas, and James.
Thank you to the estates team, events manager and catering team for their contributions towards the concert. Thank you to the team of visiting instrumental teachers for preparing the students for tonight’s concert. Thank you to parents, guardians and house staff for your support with instrumental lessons and practice.

Staff Spotlight!
Mr Fordyce, Director of One Year GCSE, Master of Swimming, and Teacher of Mathematics.
Mr Fordyce was born, grew up, and went to University in Edinburgh. After teaching Swimming and Maths at a school there, he moved to Durham in search of a change of scenery and has been at Durham School for 21 years now.
It’s well known that Mr Fordyce is a great swimming teacher, but did you know that he competed at National level previously? He’s also a fan of badminton and plays during the holidays.
After a day at Durham School, Mr Fordyce usually unwinds by watching TV, enjoying comedies, murder mysteries, or the OG Star Wars films which he recommends everyone watch!
Mr Fordyce enjoys the start of new academic years with all new challenges and the opportunity to meet new pupils. He is always proud of his pupils and their results. One class in particular achieved all A*/A!

To support our Sixth Form pupils in building their futures, we took a group to the Newcastle Autumn 2025 Fair, where they had the chance to speak with universities and apprenticeship providers.
Throughout the day, they learned about student finance, received guidance on writing their UCAS personal statements, explored the value of apprenticeships, attended a seminar on Russell Group universities, and discovered more about higher and degree apprenticeships.
Opportunities like this help pupils make informed decisions about their next steps, plan how to achieve them, and build confidence in their goals.

A group of our Year 12 Chemistry students visited Durham University`s chemical laboratories to synthesise molecules that have never been made before!
This is part of a project through the Royal Society of Chemistry where students are taking part in real academic research to find new booster drug candidates that can improve treatment for tuberculosis patients.
Many thanks to Professor Patrick Steele and Durham University for hosting us. We are looking forward to returning next month to analyse our molecules!
