Durham School Boat Club is delighted to share some exciting news: the arrival of the first of four brand-new Wintech racing boats – a significant investment that will strengthen training, performance and long-term development across the Club.
This delivery marks the beginning of a wider fleet refresh, supporting our ambitious five-year development plan and ensuring that every pupil, from developing rowers to performance athletes, has access to high-quality equipment that matches their potential.
Why Now?
Our current fleet has seen many successful seasons, but to keep pace with modern rowing performance standards, now is the right moment to invest in newer equipment. Modern rowing equipment plays a crucial role in competitive rowing, and this upgrade means our pupils can now train and race without facing limitations from ageing or outdated boats.
“These boats will make a tangible difference, allowing our rowers to compete at the highest level, with equipment that reflects their dedication and standards.”
— DSBC Coaching Team
About the New Boats
The upgraded fleet includes:
  • Two new singles – one International model and one Cobra
  • An International double
  • A Cobra quad
All models are full carbon-composite construction and designed to competition specification, making them significantly lighter, stiffer, and more responsive than traditional boats. This gives rowers increased speed, improved efficiency on the water, and a more refined feel, especially important during high-performance racing.
There is already a noticeable buzz in the boathouse as pupils try the new additions, and the feedback so far has been genuinely enthusiastic.
A Strong Partnership
DSBC has worked with Oarsport and Wintech for many years. Their team, father and son Andrew and Jack Wilson, share a genuine commitment to supporting the rowing community, whether working with performance squads or nurturing participation.
“The service we receive from Oarsport is exceptional. Their passion, technical knowledge and commitment make them an excellent partner for the Club as we move forward.”
Who Will Benefit?
All squads will use the boats as part of the phased rollout. With equipment matched to size, skill level and discipline, every athlete — from recreational rowers to competition crews — will see the benefits.
A Project Made Possible Through Generosity
This investment has been achieved through the hard work and generosity of our community.
A massive thank you goes to:
  • PODS (Parents of Durham School Boat Club) who have fundraised tirelessly over recent years
  • Old Dunelmians and Current and Former Parents whose donations via Giving Days have directly supported these purchases
  • The School, for championing the long-term value of the project
Your support means our athletes can continue to train and race in equipment worthy of their ambition.
What’s Next?
The new single arriving this week will be followed by the next boat next term, with the final delivery planned for the summer term. One of the future boats will carry particular meaning: it will be dedicated in memory of Max George, featuring a bespoke design including the Rifles crest and Durham colours – a tribute that will inspire generations of rowers.
A New Chapter for DSBC
This first delivery marks the start of a renewed strategic investment in rowing at Durham School, modernising infrastructure, improving access, and enabling pupils to progress through the performance pathway with confidence.
We look forward to seeing our athletes train, race and represent the school with pride in the years ahead, supported by equipment that reflects their hard work, talent and future potential.
