At this year’s Speech Day, our Head of School, Ed, delivered a memorable address to the school community. Standing in the grandeur of Durham Cathedral, he reflected on his journey, the spirit of Durham, and the lessons he will carry forward.
Ed began by acknowledging how surreal it felt to be giving his final words as Head of School, especially considering that he joined Durham just two years ago. He shared how quickly this place had become home and how easy it is to fall in love with the Durham School community.
Ed then went on to say that Durham School is far more than just a school. “It’s a community. A rhythm. A legacy,” he explained. It’s a place that builds confidence not just through grades and results, but through experiences that challenge and shape young people. He explained that Durham School teaches pupils not just perseverance and resilience, but also the ability to lead with empathy and care.
Reflecting on the year, Ed highlighted the many achievements of Durham pupils — from rugby, netball, and hockey, to rowing and regattas. In addition to the joy of winning trophies and world titles, he emphasised the importance of the memories made, the culture of excellence created, and the foundations laid for the future.
Ed also spoke about the unique traditions of the school, such as House Music. Describing it as “possibly the most chaotic yet sacred tradition,” he shared how rehearsals often begin with disarray, yet always transform into something remarkable on the night. For him, House Music captured the essence of Durham: the willingness to try, to support one another, and to step outside comfort zones together.
Turning to the legacy of the school, Ed reflected on his time spent with the OD Society. Conversations with former pupils reminded him that Durham is a place that remains with you for life. He encouraged current pupils to embrace their time here fully, urging them to attempt new challenges and never give up.
Ed then gave thanks to his Monitor team and the Heads of House, praising their leadership, character, and courage. He also expressed gratitude to staff for their patience, stability, and belief in pupils, which he described as “so much more than lessons… but the confidence to live them out.”
He extended his thanks to parents, recognising their sacrifices and unwavering support behind the scenes. A series of personal thank-yous followed, to individual teachers and to fellow Head of School Emily, who supported him throughout the year. And most touchingly, Ed thanked his mum for her constant encouragement, late-night calls, and reminders to keep going.
Looking ahead, Ed handed over to the new Heads of School, Sophie, Jess, and Ethan, noting their leadership and compassion already shining through. Finally, Ed addressed his fellow leavers, thanking them for the laughter, late nights, early mornings, and memories that will last a lifetime. He concluded with confidence in their futures: “I know you will all thrive in anything you set your mind to.”
His closing words, “Floreat Dunelmia,” were met with applause — a fitting end to a witty and inspiring farewell.
Thank you, Ed, for a lovely end-of-year speech and your brilliant work as a Head of School. We know you will enjoy many successes in the future.
