In a region with a number of independent schools, Durham School stands out not only for what we do, but how we do it. For more than 40 years, we have led the way in co-education, creating a learning environment where students thrive academically, artistically, athletically, and socially - all within a deeply supportive and values-driven community.
Excellence in All Areas
At Durham School, we believe in the power of "and." Academic rigour and co-curricular opportunity. Creativity and competition. STEM and the arts. Our students don’t have to choose one path, they are encouraged and enabled to explore all their interests and achieve excellence across the board.
Our co-curricular programme is one of the most dynamic and successful in the region, with a wide range of opportunities across sport, music, drama, debating, outdoor pursuits, and more. These activities aren’t treated as add-ons - they are integral to a student’s experience, woven into the school day, helping to develop confidence, collaboration, and character.
Community Through the House System
Central to the Durham School experience is our distinctive House system. Far more than just a pastoral structure, our Houses are real spaces - physical and emotional homes - where students from different year groups come together, forming lasting friendships and a strong sense of belonging. Each House has a unique personality and offers an additional layer of care, support, and celebration.
Students actively participate in a range of inter-house events and competitions, from music and drama to sport and debating. These events not only build community spirit but also give students the chance to lead, organise, and inspire.
Living Our MARK Values
Everything we do at Durham School is underpinned by our core MARK values: Moral Integrity, Ambition, Responsibility, and Kindness. These are not just words on a wall they are lived values, seen every day in how we speak to one another, how students conduct themselves, and how they rise to challenges with empathy and courage.
In Chapel, these values are often at the heart of student and staff speeches. Pupils are recognised with House Points for demonstrating them in action. You’ll even find them reflected in simple but meaningful acts like the care students take in running and maintaining the dining hall, often leaving it spotless out of shared respect and responsibility.
Tradition Meets Leadership
Durham School’s traditions are not just preserved; they are reimagined and led by students. Whether it’s Chapel services, House competitions, or special school events, pupils are entrusted with organising and hosting. This empowers them to develop leadership skills, project management experience, and the confidence to stand up and speak out.
Students also engage in regular public speaking and performance opportunities from Chapel reflections to solo musical pieces and poetry recitals helping them grow into articulate, poised individuals who are comfortable in their own skin.
A Culture of Inclusion
We are proud to be a hub of inclusivity in the North East. Our student led Inclusion group is active and visible, participating in meaningful conversations and wider community events.
Inclusivity at Durham School goes beyond labels. Here, students are not expected to fit a mould. Whether your strengths lie in sport, music, academics, leadership or all of the above we make space for every student to be themselves and to flourish.
Looking Ahead
Durham School is evolving, thoughtfully and purposefully. The successful launch of Lodge House marks an exciting phase in our co-educational journey, with a healthy balance of boys and girls across the school. Our STEM provision is also seeing new energy and innovation, with growing student engagement thanks to inspiring leadership from the Heads of Science and ICT.
A Place Where You Can Be More
If there’s one message we’d love every prospective student and parent to understand, it’s this: At Durham School, you don’t have to choose between your passions. You can be an academic and a performer. A scientist and a sports captain. A leader and a listener. Our vibrant, integrated community exists to support and celebrate every facet of who you are and who you’re becoming.
Our success in co-education didn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of decades of thoughtful leadership, intentional culture, and a deep understanding of what young people need to thrive.
Welcome to Durham School where you can be everything you are meant to be.
